In his talk at I TAKE Unconference 2014, Alexandru Bolboaca described a model that allows a programmer to organize these practices in an order that is most helpful for her career. At the same time, it allows a CTO or technical manager to roughly evaluate the teams he’s leading and figure out the next steps in their development.

If someone wants to have something solved, he often has already a concrete idea in mind and tells you how to implement it.

With changing the focus and looking at the Why, Who, How and the What your final solution might be entirely different compared to the initial suggestion. You will realize that you can use this technique for nearly everything.

Learn from and with others, by getting involved in local / international practitioners communities. For example, we run in Zurich a monthly Software Craftsmanship Meetup with very diverse topics
Attend conferences to get inspired by the talks and workshops, as well as the discussions with participants and other speakers.
Take time for yourself, relax, free your mind and new ideas and thoughts will pop up automatically!

Hexagonal Architecture Ports&Adapters with J. Martinsson & R. Sanlaville

Until recently, layered architecture was the most common way of organizing large applications or modules. We’ve learned from practice that it has limitations:

business rules tend to escape or be duplicated in UI and/or data layer
switching from a database to another is very difficult
adding another UI to the application (eg. mobile or smart client) requires heavy changes
changing a library used by the application with another is often complex and risky

A new architecture style has appeared in the recent years that tackles this problem: Hexagonal Architecture, or Ports & Adapters. Its intent is to allow more flexibility by cleanly separating business rules from everything else.

Johann Martinsson and Rémy Sanlaville have described the basics of Hexagonal Architecture and then shown an example of such an architecture.

Playing with projections

Thomas Coopman is an independent software engineer and consultant focused on the full stack: frontend, backend and mostly people, practices and processes. At #itakeunconf, in his hands-on session, the participants will be implementing projections based on an event stream we provide.

#1. Please share with us 5 things you did that helped you grow and become the professional you are today

I draw most of my inspiration from visiting and organizing events in the communities. Additionally, the Software Craftsmanship Slack Team is a great place to start discussing with craftspeople all over the world.

1) Experimenting with different career choices until it felt good

2) Exchanging experiences with fellow professionals by attending meetups, usergroups and conferences

3) Fighting the urge to assume I’m always right

4) Limiting the subjects I’m willing to learn and invest time in

5) Investing in my communication techniques. I’m continuously learning to speak non-techie. I’m practicing speaking in front of an audience.

#2. What challenges will the participants find solutions to during your session at I T.A.K.E Unconference 2017?

The ability to extract useful knowledge from a store of historical events.

#3. Recommend for the participants 3 sources you find inspiration from and would help them better understand you

1) The Software Craftsmanship and Testing community are awesome. Reach out to them.

2) Listen to any podcast or audiobook during your commute. It’s far better for your personal growth than listening to the (mostly bad) news on the radio. I particularly like these podcasts: Star Talk Radio and Hardcore History.

3) Pick up a musical instrument and learn to play it adequately. I tend to relax with a guitar in my hands or a piano at my fingertips.
